Civility

I’ve seen kindness from strangers for most of my life, but one story that comes to mind is when my father was remodeling the bathroom, and tried to throw the old toilet into an industrial rent-a-dumpster. My dad is strong, but he’s also rather short. And as he was struggling with the load, that toilet fell from the rim of the dumpster, and broke on top of him. It cut up his arm pretty badly. He bled all over the driveway. We had to rush him to the ER. When we brought him home, we found that all the blood–plus the toilet–had been cleaned away. Our new neighbor, whom we did not know, decided that we’d have an easier time if we didn’t have to face my father’s blood and the shattered, attack potty.
